Throughout life's journey we each travel down our own respective paths. Along the way, the places and people we encounter shape us. When our paths diverge with another, we leave a small piece of ourselves behind. Early in his musical journey in the late 1970's, Laurence Ewashko seized the opportunity to study in the soviet Ukrainian capital Kyiv. His experience there helped inform his musical understanding and cultivated a deep love for Ukrainian art song. He then travelled to Vienna where he studies, and was inspired by, the brilliance of Schumann's writing. He was moved by the poetry of Joseph von Eichendorff as he sang Liederkries Op. 39 in his graduating recital. Upon returning to Canada, professor Ewashko began to teach at the University of Ottawa School of Music. There, he met pianists Aude Urbancic, and they began to work together on many collaborations. When they decided to record a CD, their obvious choice of recording engineer was Julian Bertino, a graduate from the University of Ottawa. They felt it was important to include a Canadian composer to complete the set. They were delighted when Robert Hall reached out to Ewashko with a new set of works to premiere.

The title of this CD is Batkivshchyna, a word in Ukrainian which means homeland. Though the repertoire and title was selected in the Autumn of 2021, the nuanced meaning behind the significance of home has become more relevant today. All three artists were shocked and devastated to hear of the invasion of Ukraine the morning after they recorded the arrangements by Lyatoshynsky. These songs which represent landscape, identity, and the heart's longing for one's home becomes paramount. Music resides within many of us as a reminder of where our journey began, and the places that our paths have taken us. The vibrant force of music can gift us with the ability to recall treasured memories from our past that have the power to transport us home.
